Milward's Steel Crochet Hook No. 8.

GAUGE: When blocked, each motif measures about 3¼ inches square (4½ inches from point to point).

Chair Back: about 13½ x 18 inches
Arm Pieces: about 9 inches wide measuring at points

CHAIR BACK—First Motif … Starting at center, ch 9. 1st rnd: D c in 9th ch from hook, (ch 5, d c in same place as last d c) twice; * ch 2, skip 2 ch, in next ch make d c, ch 5 and d c. Repeat from * once more, ch 2, skip 2 ch, d c in next d c, ch 2, d c in 3rd st of ch-5 first made (a square of 3 x 3 sps made). 2nd rnd: Ch 4 to count as a tr; make 2 tr in top of last d c of previous rnd, retaining on hook last loop of each tr; thread over and draw through all loops on hook, ch 1 tightly (a cluster made). Ch 3 more, make 3 tr in same place, retaining last loop of each tr and completing as for previous cluster. Ch 3, d c at base of same d c of previous rnd, * 2 d c in next sp, d c in next d c, ch 3, skip 2 ch, in next ch make two 3-tr clusters with ch-3 between. Ch 3, d c in next d c. Repeat from * around. Join last ch-3 with sl st to tip of 1st cluster.
   3rd rnd: Sl st in next sp, ch 4 (to count as tr) and complete a cluster in same sp, ch 3 (for corner), cluster in same sp, * ch 3, 4 d c in next sp, ch 2, 4 d c in next sp, ch 3; in next sp make cluster, ch 3 (for corner), cluster in same sp.    Make 14 motifs in all for chair back, joining as in illustration at all adjacent sides—where 4 corners meet, join 3rd and 4th corners to joining of previous corners. Work s c all around edges.
