Contoured Crochet Rug Pattern #11

MATERIALS—Lily SKYTONE Mercerized Crochet Cotton:—13-balls Salmon Rose and 16-balls Rose Fraise. Crochet hook size 0. Size—22" x 37".

Use 3 strands at all times.

CENTER—Block—With 3 strands Salmon Rose, ch 31, sk last ch, 3 sc in next ch, sc in next 28 ch, 3 sc in next (end) ch. On opposite side of ch, make sc in next 28 sts, sl st in back lp of 1st sc. Work all following rows in single back lp of each sc. ROW 2—Ch 1 (rather loosely), turn, 2 sc in back lp of sl st, * sc in back lps of next 28 sc, 3 sc in next (corner) sc, 1 sc in next sc, ** 3 sc in next (corner) sc. Repeat from * to **. 1 sc in front lp of 1st ch-1, sl st in back lp of 1st sc. ROW 3—Repeat Row 2 to *. ** Sc in next 3 sc, 3 sc in next (corner) sc, sc in next 30 sc, ** 3 sc in next (corner) sc. Repeat from ** to **. 1 sc in front lp of 1st ch-1, sl st in back lp of 1st sc. ROW 4—Repeat Row 2 to *. ** 1 sc in each sc across long side (2 more than in last row and always an even no. of sts), 3 sc in center sc at corner, 1 sc in each sc across end (2 more than in last row and always an uneven no. of sts), ** 3 sc in center sc at corner. Repeat from ** to **. 1 sc in front lp of 1st ch-1, sl st in back lp of 1st sc. ROW 5—Repeat Row 2 to *. ** l sc in each sc across end (2 more than last row and always an uneven no. of sts), 3 sc in center sc at corner, 1 sc in each sc across long side (2 more than last row and always an even no. of sts), ** 3 sc in center sc at corner. Repeat from ** to **. 1 sc in front lp of 1st ch-1, sl st in back lp of 1st sc. Repeat Rows 4 and 5 twice and Row 4 again (10 rows making 5 complete ribs),—48 sc across long sides, corner sc to corner sc inclusive, and 21 sc across ends, corner sc to corner sc inclusive, in final row. The right side of 10th row is right side of Block. Cut 6" long, thread to a needle and fasten off on back.

2d BLOCK—Repeat 1st Block, but without fastening off, ch 1, turn, lay 2 Blocks right-sides-together and work across ends of both at once, crocheting them together:—Insert hook thru both lps of last sl st and on thru center sc at corner of other Block, thread over and pull thru everything on hook (a sl st made), (a sl st thru both lps of next sc on both Blocks) 20 times. Cut and fasten off on back. Make and join 2 more Blocks endwise to complete 1st Strip. Repeat for 3d and 5th Strips.

Start and end 2d Strip with a Half-Block:—Ch 16, sk last ch, sc in next 14 ch, 3 sc in end ch, 14 sc on other side of ch. ROW 2—Ch 1, turn and in back lps, sc in last 14 sc, 3 sc in next (corner) sc, 1 sc in next sc, 3 sc in next (corner) sc, sc in next 14 sc. ROW 3—Ch 1, turn, 1 sc in each sc across side (1 more than last row), 3 sc in center sc at corner, 1 sc in each sc across end (2 more than last row and always an uneven no. of sts), 3 sc in center sc at corner, 1 sc in each sc across side (1 more than last row). Repeat Row 3 seven times (10 rows making 5 complete ribs). Fasten off. Make and join 2 Blocks, then join a Half-Block at each end, completing 2d Strip. Repeat for 4th Strip. On one side of each Strip, mark the 2 center (24th and 25th) sc on long side of each Block. Lay 2 Strips in right order right-side-tog. and crochet tog. with sl sts in same way as Blocks were joined, exactly matching the corner sc on 2 Blocks to the 2 marked sc on opposite Strip. Make and join the 5 Strips in same way. BORDER—With right-side-up, make a row of sc around Center,—decreasing slightly, making 16 sc across end of each Strip and 42 sc across side of each Block,—going thru both lps of each sc. Make only 1 sc in center sc at each corner (no widening in this row). Fasten off. ROW 2—Turn wrong-side-up and with 3 strands Rose Fraise, make sc in a corner, draw out lp on hook ⅜ inch long, thread over and pull thru, insert hook in back strand of long st, thread over and pull thru, thread over and pull thru the 2 lps on hook to complete sc (a Knot St made). Make a 2d Knot St (Knot St lp made), sc in same corner st, * (make another Knot St lp of 2 Knot Sts, sc in next 2 sc) repeated across side, (a Knot St lp, sc) 3 times in corner sc. Repeat from * around. End with a Knot St lp, sc in 1st corner, a Knot St lp, sl st in 1st sc. ROW 3—Ch 1, turn, 2 sc in sl st, * hold Knot St lp down in front, sc in each sc between Knot St lps. Repeat from * around. At corners make 3 sc in center sc. End row with 1 sc in 1st corner, sl st in 1st sc. ROW 4—Ch 1, turn, sc in sl st, a Knot St lp, sc in same st. Repeat Row 2 beginning at *, Repeat Rows 3 and 4 thru 7 Knot St rows. Repeat Row 3 once more, then turn and make a sl st in each sc around, working tightly for a firm edge.

Stretch and pin rug right-side-down in true shape on a padded board or table. Steam end press dry thru a cloth.
