MATERIALS REQUIRED:
DAISY Mercerized Crochet Cotton, Art. 65, size 30:—6 skeins White and 1 skein each Emerald Green, Lavender and Pansy; or
DAISY Mercerized Crochet Cotton, Art. 97, size 30:—8 balls White and 1 ball each Emerald Green, Lavender and Pansy; or
Lily MERCROCHET Cotton, Art. 161, size 30:—9 balls White and 2 balls each Hunter Green, Dk. Lavender and Pansy.
GAUGE—With DAISY:—6 sps = 1 inch, 6 rows = 1 inch; with MERCROCHET:—7 sps = 1 inch, 7 rows = 1 inch.
Steel crochet hook No. 13.
One square yard lemon yellow linen.

EDGING—Starting at one corner at A on Chart, ch 8, dc in 8th ch from hook. ROW 2—Ch 3, turn, 3 dc in ch-8 sp, ch 2, tr in same sp. ROW 3—Ch 7, turn, dc in tr, 2 dc in next ch-2 sp, dc in next 3 dc, dc in end ch-3 (a half-sp and 2 blks made). ROW 4—Ch 3, turn, dc in next 6 dc, ch 2, dc in 3d st of end ch, ch 2, tr in same st. ROW 5—Ch 7, turn, dc in tr, 1 blk, 1 sp, 2 blks. Continue, following Chart, thru Row 23. ROW 24—Ch 3, turn, 2 blks, 2 sps, 1 blk, 10 sps, 2 blks, 1 sp, ch 5, tr in end half-sp. ROW 25—Ch 7, turn, dc in tr, ch 5, dc in next dc (long sp made), ch 2, dc in next dc, ch 5, sk 5 dc, dc in next dc, 1 blk, 9 sps, 1 blk, 1 sp, 2 blks. ROW 26—Ch 3, turn, 2 blks, 2 sps, 1 blk, 6 sps, 2 blks, (1 sp, 1 long sp) twice, ch 2, dc in 3d st of end sp, ch 2, tr in same st. ROW 27—Ch 10, turn, sk tr, dc in next dc, (1 sp, 1 long sp) 3 times, 1 blk, 5 sps, 1 blk, 1 sp, 2 blks. ROW 28—Ch 3, turn, 3 blks, 1 sp, 5 blks, (1 sp, 1 long sp) 3 times, 1 sp, ch 5, dc in 6th st of end ch-10, ch 2, tr in same st. ROW 30—Ch 6, turn, sk 4 ch, dc in next 2 ch, dc in next dc (1 blk added at beg. of row), 1 blk, 2 sps, 1 blk, 6 sps, 2 blks, (1 sp, 1 long sp) 3 times, 1 sp, ch 5, tr in end half-sp. * Continue, following Chart, starting next row as in Row 25, ending the next row as in Row 26, starting next row as in Row 27 and so on thru Row 30. Repeat from * thru Row 49. ROW 50—Ch 3, turn, 2 blks, 1 sp, 1 blk, 42 sps, 2 blks, 1 sp. ROW 51—Ch 3, turn, 1 blk, 44 sps, 1 blk, 1 sp, 2 blks. ROW 52—Repeat Row 50. ROW 53—Ch 5, turn dc in next dc, 1 long sp, 1 blk, 41 sps, 1 blk, 1 sp, 2 blks. ROW 54—Ch 3, turn, 2 blks, 1 sp, 1 blk, 39 sps, 2 blks, 1 sp, 1 long sp, 1 sp. Continue, following Chart, thru Row 96. Then repeat Rows 51 to 96 incl. 3 times, and Rows 51 and 52 again. Now reverse Chart and beg. at Row 49, ch 4, turn, sk 1st sp, dc in next dc, 1 long sp, 1 blk, 41 sps, 1 blk, 1 sp and 2 blks. ROW 48—Ch 3, turn, 2 blks, 1 sp, 1 blk, 39 sps, 2 blks, 1 sp, ch 2, tr in next dc. ROW 47—Ch 4, turn, sk tr, dc in next dc, 1 sp, 1 long sp and follow Chart across. ROW 46—Ch 3, turn and follow Chart across, ending with 1 long sp, tr in next dc. ROW 45—Ch 7, turn, sk long sp, dc in next dc, 1 sp, 1 long sp, 1 blk and follow Chart across. ROW 44—Ch 3, turn and follow Chart across, ending with 1 sp, tr in 3d st of end ch-7. ROW 43—Ch 4, turn, sk 1 sp, dc in next dc, 1 long sp, 1 sp, 1 long sp, 1 blk and continue across. * End next row as in Row 48, start next row as in Row 47, end next row as in Row 46, start next row as in Row 45, end next row as in Row 44 and start next row as in Row 43. Repeat from * thru Row 24. NEXT ROW—Ch 4, turn, dc in next dc, 1 blk and complete row. NEXT ROW—End row with 13 sps, tr in next dc. Continue in same way until miter corner is worked out to Row 1. Fasten off.

Stretch and pin Edging right-side-down in true shape. Steam and press dry thru a cloth.

Repeat for each side of cloth. Sew miter corners tog. exactly matching rows. Hem linen to fit lace and whip lace to edge. PANSY—With Pansy thread and starting midway between a Purple and a Yellow section, ch 7, join with sl st to form ring. ROW 2—Ch 1, 12 sc in ring, join with sl st in back lp of 1st sc. Pull out lp on hook, pass ball thru and pull tight. Drop on back, but do not cut. ROW 3—Join Lavender in same place with last sl st, and working in back lps. 1st Petal—Ch 3, (dc, ch 2, tr) in same st, (ch 2, dtr) twice in same st, * (ch 2, dtr) twice in back lp of next sc, ch 2, (tr, ch 2, dc) in same st, ch 3, sc in back lp of next sc, ** 2d Petal—Repeat 1st Petal to *. (Ch 2, dtr in next sc) twice. Repeat 1st Petal from * to **. 3d, 4th & 5th Petals—Repeat 1st Petal 3 times. Edge—Draw Pansy thread thru the lp on hook, dropping Lavender at back. 1st Petal Edge—Ch 5, sc in 1st ch-3 sp on next petal, (ch 5, sc in next ch-2 sp) 8 times around petal to end ch-3 sp, ch 5, sc in sc between petals. 2d Petal—Ch 5, sc in 1st ch-3 sp on next petal, (ch 5, sc in next sp) 10 times around to end ch-3 sp, ch 5, sc in sc between petals. Repeat 1st Petal Edge 3 times,—around 3d, 4th & 5th Petals. Fasten off Pansy thread. Insert hook in sc between 3d and 4th Petals, pull Lavender across back of flower and draw thru, * ch 5, sc in 1st ch-5 lp on 4th petal, (ch 5, sc in next lp) repeated around petal, ch 5, sc in sc between petals. Repeat from * around next (5th) petal. Fasten off. Lap 4th Petal over 5th Petal (2 top petals). Lap 1st Petal over 5th Petal and 3d Petal over 4th Petal. Lap 2d (large bottom) petal over both 1st and 3d Petals. Tack lightly. Make 3.

LEAF—With Green, ch 16, sk 1 ch, sc in next ch, * hdc in next 2 ch, dc in next 9 ch, hdc in next 2 ch, * 3 sc in next (end) ch. Working on other side of ch, repeat from * to *, sc in end ch. ROW 2—Sc in next 3 sts, hdc in next st, (dc, ch 1, sc) in next st, * sc in next st, hdc in next st, (dc, ch 1, sc) in next st. * Repeat from * to * twice. Sc in next st, 3 sc in next st, sc in next st, ** (sc, ch 1, dc) in next st, hdc in next st, sc in next st. Repeat from ** 3 times, sc in next 2 sc, sl st in next sc, ch 10, sk 1 ch, sc in next 9 ch, sl st in end of leaf. Fasten off. Make 5.

Tack 3 Pansies and 5 Leaves on each upside-down "V" around Edging, as in illustration. Tack 1 Pansy and 2 Leaves on each corner "V". Pin Pansies in place, then working on wrong side, tack them very lightly. Sew the Leaves in place, working on right side. Press on back.
