Size 34-36

Materials: Clark's O.N.T. Knitting and Crochet Cotton, 7 balls of color 126 Spanish Red, and 26 balls of Mercerized Crochet, size 10, color 55 Navy Blue. Milward's steel crochet hook No. 2. Use one strand of each color together.

Gauge: 2 patterns equal 1 inch; 2 rows equal 1 inch.

Back: (Left half) Beginning at lower edge, ch 51, turn. (Using one strand of each color). 1st row: D c in 4th ch from hook, d c in each st of foundation ch, ch 5, turn. 2nd row: Insert hook in 1st d c, * draw out a loop, ch 2 (leaving 2 loops on hook) thread over, skip next 2 d c, insert hook in next d c, draw out a loop, (4 loops on hook), thread over and work off 2 loops at a time (as a tr). Ch 2, insert hook in same st. Repeat from * to end of row, ending with ch-2 and always make a d c to make edge even. Ch 3, turn. (Count the turning ch-3 as 1 d c throughout directions). 3rd row: D c under next ch-2 sp. Make a long d c in next triangular sp, * 2 d c under next ch-2 sp, make a long d c in next triangular sp. Repeat from * to end of row making 1 d c in turning ch-5. Ch 5, turn. 4th to 9th rows incl: Alternate 2nd and 3rd rows. At end of 9th row ch 5, turn. 10th row: To shape side seam at waistline, work thus—insert hook in 1st d c, * draw out a loop, ch 2 (leaving 2 loops on hook), thread over, skip next 3 d c, (this is a decrease) insert hook in next d c, draw out a loop, (4 loops on hook), thread over and work off 2 loops at a time. Ch 2, insert hook in same st. Repeat from * 2 more times. Then continue with pattern throughout the row, as done previously, skipping 2-d c instead of 3-d c, ch 3, turn. 11th to 19th rows incl: Work evenly. 20th row: Same as 10th row. 21st to 29th rows incl: Work evenly. At end of 29th row, ch 5, turn. 30th row: To increase at this point, work as follows: Insert hook in 1st d c, * draw out a loop, ch 2, (leaving 2 loops on hook), thread over, skip next 1-d c, insert hook in next d c, draw out a loop, (4 loops on hook), thread over and work off 2 loops at a time (as a tr). Ch 2, insert hook in same st. Repeat from * 2 more times, then continue with pattern for the rest of the row, skipping 2 d c instead of 1 d c. Ch 3, turn.

31st to 35th rows incl: Work evenly. 36th row: Same as 30th row. 37th row: Work evenly this and all odd rows throughout. 38th, 40th and 42nd rows: Same as 30th row. 44th row: Begin to shape armhole. Same as 10th row. 46th, 48th, 50th and 52nd rows: Same as 10th row. 54th row: Work evenly. 56th row: Work this and all even rows to 68th row incl, same as 10th row. 69th to 73rd rows incl: Work evenly, break off.

Back: (Right half) Reverse directions for left half of back. That is, make increases and decreases at end of rows instead of at the beginning. This is very important, since there is a right and a wrong side of the work.

Front: (Right side) ch 72, turn. 1st row: D c in 4th ch from hook, d c in each st of foundation ch, ch 5, turn. 2nd to 25th rows incl: Continue with pattern evenly. At end of 25th row, ch 5, turn. 26th row: Same as 10th row or left half of back. 27th to 33rd rows incl: Work evenly. At end of 33rd row, ch 5, turn. 34th row: Same as 30th row of left half of back. 35th to 37th rows incl: Work evenly. 38th row: Same as 34th row. 39th row: Work evenly. 40th to 43rd rows incl: Alternate 38th and 39th rows. At end of 43rd row, ch 1, turn. 44th row: Begin to shape armhole, s c in each of next 9 d c, ch 5, insert hook in st where last s c was made, then continue from * of 10th row of left half of back. 45th row: Work evenly, ch 1, turn. 46th row: S c in 1st d c, s c in each of next 3 d c, ch 5, insert hook in st where last s c was made, then continue from * of 10th row of back. 47th row: Work evenly this and all odd rows from here on to 67th row (last row). 48th row: Work same as 10th row of back for this and all even rows (excepting 60th row which is worked same as 46th row). At end of 67th row, fasten off.

Front: (Left side) Reverse directions for right side of front. That is, shaping side seam and armhole at end of rows instead of beginning.

Raglan Sleeve: (Right) Ch 52, turn. 1st row: D c in 4th ch from hook, d c in each st of foundation ch, ch 5, turn. 2nd to 5th rows incl: Work evenly in jacket pattern. 6th row: To increase at this point work thus: insert hook in 1st d c, * draw out a loop, ch 2, (leaving 2 loops on hook), thread over, skip next 1-d c, insert hook in next d c, draw out a loop, (4 loops on hook), thread over and work off 2 loops at a time, ch 2, insert hook in same st. * Repeat from * to * 2 more times, then continue with pattern, skipping 2 d c instead of 1 d c to within 6 d c (including turning ch-3) from end of row, then insert hook in same st. Repeat from * to * 3 times, d c to make edge even, ch 3, turn. 7th row: Work evenly. From here on, work as follows: 8th, 16th, 24th, 30th, 36th, 42nd, and 48th rows: Same as 6th row. Work evenly all other rows to 53rd row incl. At end of 53rd row, ch 1, turn.

54th row: Begin to shape sleeve. S c in 1st d c, s c in each of next 6 d c, ch 5, insert hook in st where last s c was made, and continue with pattern to within 6 d c from end of row (counting the turning ch-3 as 1 d c). Ch 3, turn. 55th row: Work evenly. Ch 1, turn. 56th row: S c in 1st d c, s c in each of next 4 d c, ch 5, insert hook in st where last s c was made, * draw out a loop, ch 2 (leaving 2 loops on hook), thread over, skip next 3 d c, (this is a decrease), insert hook in next d c, draw out a loop, (4 loops on hook) thread over and work off 2 loops at a time. Ch 2, insert hook in same st. Repeat from * across to within 4 d c from end of row, ch 3, turn. 57th to 61st rows incl: Work evenly. At the end of 61st row ch 1, turn. 62nd row: S c in 1st d c, s c in each of next 3 d c, ch 5, insert hook in st where last s c was made, and continue with pattern to end of row. Do not decrease at this end. Ch 3, turn. 63rd row: Work evenly, ch 1, turn. 64th row: Same as 62nd row.

65th, 66th and 67th rows: Work evenly. At the end of 67th row, ch 5, turn. 68th row: Insert hook in 1st d c, draw out a loop, ch 2 (leaving 2 loops on hook), thread over, skip next 2 d c, * insert hook in next d c, draw out a loop, thread over and work off 2 loops at a time. Ch 2, insert hook in same st, draw out a loop, ch 2, thread over, skip next 3 d c. Repeat from * to end of row, ch 3, turn. 69th to 73rd rows incl: Work evenly. At the end of 73rd row, ch 5, turn. 74th row: Same as 68th row. 75th row: Work evenly. Ch 5, turn. 76th row: Insert hook in 1st d c, draw out a loop, ch 2, thread over, skip next 2 d c, insert hook in next d c, draw out a loop, thread over and work off 2 loops at a time. Ch 2, insert hook in same st. Draw out a loop, ch 2, thread over, skip next 2 d c, * insert hook in next d c, draw out a loop, thread over and work off 2 loops at a time. Ch 2, insert hook in same st, draw out a loop, ch 2, thread over, skip next 3 d c. Repeat from * to end of row, ch 3, turn. 77th row: Work evenly, ch 5, turn. 78th row: Insert hook in 1st d c, * draw out a loop, ch 2, thread over, skip next 3 d c, insert hook in next d c, draw out a loop, thread over and work off 2 loops at a time. Ch 2, insert hook in same st. Repeat from * to end of row. Ch 3, turn. 79th, 80th, 81st rows: Work evenly. At the end of 81st row, ch 5, turn. 82nd row: Insert hook in 1st d c, draw out a loop, ch 2, thread over, skip next 4 d c, * insert hook in next d c draw out a loop, thread over, work off 2 loops at a time. Ch 2, thread over, skip next 3 d c. Repeat from * to end of row, ch 3, turn. 83rd row: Work evenly. Break off. Reverse directions for the left sleeve (decreasing at the end of the rows instead of at the beginning). Whip seams together.

Collar Band: 1st to 4th rows incl: Holding the wrong side towards you, attach thread at front seam point of raglan sleeve. For stitch, refer again to 2nd row of back of jacket and repeat the stitch pattern. Work across to other front seam point of sleeve.
