Materials: Clark's O.N.T. (17 balls) or J. & P. Coats (14 balls) Mercerized Crochet, Size 20, White, Ecru, or Linen. Milward's steel crochet hook No. 8. Square of linen. 64 inches.

Gauge: Each large sp measures about ½ inch square.

CENTER SQUARE. Ch 354, turn. 1st row: 1 tr tr (thread over 4 times) in 17th ch from hook, * ch 5, skip 5, tr tr in next ch, repeat from * to end (57 sps in row). Always ch 11 to turn. 2nd row: Tr tr in next tr tr, and continue with sps to end. Turn. 3rd row: Same as 2nd row, turn. 4th row: 3 sps, 1 tr tr in each tr tr, and 5 tr tr in in each ch-5 sp of next 17 sps, 1 sp, tr tr in each tr tr and 5 tr tr in each ch-5 sp of next 15 sps, 1 sp, tr tr over next 17 sps, 3 sps, turn. 5th row: 3 sps, 1 tr tr in each of next 7 tr tr (forming 1 bl), 15 sps, 1 bl, 1 sp, 1 bl, 13 sps, 1 bl, 1 sp, 1 bl, 15 sps, 1 bl, 3 sps, turn. 6th row: Same as 5th row, turn. 7th row: Same as 5th row, turn. 8th row: Like 5th row, excepting across 13 center sps. Over these make 1 sp, 1 bl, alternately. Turn. 9th, 10th and 11th rows: Same as 8th row. 12th row: 3 sps, 1 bl, 7 sps, all blocks to within 7 sps from last bl of previous row, 7 sps over these 7 sps, 1 bl, 3 sps, turn. 13th row: 3 sps, 1 bl, 7 sps, 1 bl, 7 sps, 1 bl, 1 sp and 1 bl alternately over center 17 bls, then 1 bl, 7 sps, 1 bl, 7 sps, 1 bl, 3 sps, turn. 14th and 15th rows: Same as 13th row, excepting over 17 center bls and sps make all 17 sps. 16th row: 3 sps, 1 bl, 7 sps, 1 bl, 3 sps, 27 bls, 3 sps, 1 bl, 7 sps, 1 bl, 3 sps, turn. 17th, 18th and 19th rows: Same as 16th row, excepting work over the 27 center bls as follows: 1 bl, 3 sps, 1 bl, 17 sps, 1 bl, 3 sps, 1 bl, turn. 20th row: 3 sps, 51 bls, 3 sps, turn. 21st row: 11 sps, 1 bl, 3 sps, 1 bl, 3 sps, 1 bl, ** 1 sp, * ch 1, skip 1, tr tr in next, and repeat from * twice; then repeat from ** until 9 ch-5 sps have been made with groups of ch-1 sps between 1 bl, 3 sps, 1 bl, 3 sps, 1 bl, 11 sps, turn. 22nd row: 3 sps, 10 bls, 2 sps, 1 bl, 3 sps, 1 bl, sl st down ⅔rds of tr tr last made. Continue across center, making 1 d c in each tr tr, ch 5 over each ch-5, ch 1 over each ch-1. Last d c is made in tr tr after center, turn, ch 8, skip 1st d c and work across center as before. After making last ch-5, sl st to tr tr at which center started, ⅓rd down from top, then sl st to top of this tr tr, turn, work across center again in same way. End row same as beginning. Turn. 23rd row: 3 sps, 1 bl, 7 sps, 1 bl, 3 sps, 1 bl, 3 sps, 1 bl, work across center same as 21st row, and end row same as beginning. Turn. 24th row: 3 sps, 1 bl, 3 sps, 6 bls, 2 sps, 1 bl, 3 sps, 1 bl, 3 d c rows across center as in 22nd row, and end row same as beginning. 25th to 29th rows incl: Repeat 23rd and 24th rows. The 29th row is the center of the square. 30th to 57th rows incl: Reverse pattern, making 30th row same as 28th, 31st row same as 27th, etc., the 57th being the same as the 1st row. INSERTION. Ch 102. * Work 15 sps to the row for 6 rows, then 1 row of bls. Repeat from * for desired length. Make corner like center in the square crocheted piece, working 1 tr tr row and 3 d c rows alternately until there are 27 rows in all, beginning and ending with 3 d c rows. For 2nd side of insertion work a row of sps down side edge of corner, and continue for desired length as was done before. After four sides and four corners have been made, join the last corner to starting ch of 1st side. Set in as shown in illustration.
