Tassel and Cord Pattern #304H

There are slight variations to materials and instructions between these versions of the same pattern in different publications. Versions are below.

 

Tassel and Cord Pattern #304H from Spool Cotton #34, Crochet Designs For The Hostess.

These can be made of Clark's O.N.T. or J. & P. Coats Mercerized Crochet in Size 5 to 10. Curtain pulls are usually made in White or Ecru, but if you wish to make tassels for other decorative purposes, you will find interesting colors from which to choose in Size 10. Use a Milward's steel crochet hook No. 7, 8 or 9. A board 15 x 4 x 1 inches with a 2-inch nail ½ inch from end is useful to wind your tassel on. If not convenient, a book will serve.

Tassel. Make a ring by winding thread around thumb 20 times. Place 43 s c in this ring. 2nd rnd: 1 s c in each s c. Join around with sl st. 3rd rnd: * S c in each of next 3 s c, ch 3 for a p. Repeat from * until 7 p have been made. After 7th p, * s c in next s c, ch 4, skip 2 s c, and repeat from * 6 more times making 7 ch-4 loops in all. Break thread and wind over a 5-inch cardboard 10 times, tying this into 2nd ch-4 loop. Make 4 more fringes in same way in each of next 4 ch-4 loops (5 in all). Cord. Ch 2, s c in 1st ch, * turn work around, insert hook through both loops of st just made, and s c. Repeat from * until 7 to 8 inches of cord are made. Sew cord to 4th p at top of tassel.

These attractive decorative articles are made of Clark's O.N.T. or J. & P. Coats Mercerized Crochet, size 3, 5 or 10. White and Ecru are most popularly used for curtain pulls, and when used for other purposes there is an array of gay colors in size 10 from which to choose. Use Milward's steel crochet hook No. 7, 8 or 9.

When heavy effects are desired, choose Clark's O.N.T. Cronita or Knitting and Crochet Cotton; or J. & P. Coats Knit-Cro-Sheen or Crochet Cord.

No. 910—Tassel: Make a ring by winding thread around thumb 20 times. Make 43 s c in this ring. 2nd rnd: 1 s c in each s c. Join with sl st, ch 1. 3rd rnd: * S c in each of next 3 s c, ch 3 for a picot, repeat from * 6 more times. Then **'s c in next s c, ch 4, skip 2 s c, repeat from ** 6 more times, and fasten off. To make fringe, wind thread 10 times around a 5- inch cardboard, slip off board and knot through 2nd ch-4 loop. Make similar fringe for each of next 4 ch-4 loops.

Cord: Ch 2, s c in 1st ch. * Turn work over, insert hook down through the 2 loops around base of st just made and make an s c. Repeat from * for de­sired length. Sew cord to center picot at top of tassel.

Required yardage is specified for each design. Choose one of the following threads in size 5:
Clark's O.N.T. Mercerized Crochet.
J. & P. Coats Mercerized Crochet.
J. & P. Coats Big Ball Best Six Cord Mercerized Crochet.
Clark's Big Ball Mercerized Crochet.

Materials: About 28 yds are required for 1 curtain pull.
Milward's steel crochet hook No. 5 or 6.
A bone ring, 1 inch in diameter.

Cord. Ch 2, turn. S c in 2nd ch from hook, ch 1, turn. * Working loosely, make s c in s c just made, ch 1, turn. Repeat from * for 12 inches. Sl st to cord 4 inches in from hook. Fasten and break off.

Ring. 1st rnd: Make 43 s c in bone ring. 2nd rnd: S c in each s c. 3rd rnd: * S c in each of next 3 s c, ch-3 p, repeat from * until 9 p's are made. Then s c in each of next 2 s c, ** ch 4, skip 2 s c, s c in next s c. Repeat from ** until 5 loops are made. Join with sl st. Fasten and break off.

Fringe. Make fringe in each of 5 loops. To make a fringe, cut 10 strands of thread, each 12 inches long. Double these strands, forming a loop. Pull loop through sp and draw the loose ends of fringe through this loop. Pull tight. Trim fringe evenly. Sew cord to center p of ring.
