YARN: 4-ounces of 3-ply Baby Yarn.
CROCHET HOOK: 1-bone #3.
SWEATER: Yoke: Starting at the neck edge, make a chain of 85 sts; 1 d c in 3rd st from hook and in each remaining chain (83 sts and the first chain make 84 sts). Ch 3, turn. 2nd row: Make * 1 d c in next 2 sts, 2 d c in next st; repeat from * across row (27 increases). Ch 3, turn. 3rd row: Make 1 d c in each st across row (111 sts). Ch 3, turn. 4th row: Make * 1 d c in next 3 sts, 2 d c in next st; repeat from * across row (27 increases). Ch 3, turn. 5th row: Make 1 d c in each st across row. Ch 3, turn. 6th row: Make * 1 d c in next 6 sts, 2 d c in next st; repeat from * across row (19 increases). Ch 3, turn. 7th row: Make 1 d c in each st across row (157 sts). Ch 3, turn. 8th row: Make * 1 d c in next 7 sts, 2 d c in next st; repeat from * 17 times more (18 increases), d c to end of row. Ch 3, turn. 9th row: Make 1 d c in each st across row (175 sts). Ch 3, turn. Foundation row: Make 1 d c in next d c, ch 2, 2 d c in same place as last d c, * ch 2, skip 2 sts, into the next st make - 2 d c, ch 2, 2 d c (shell); repeat from * across row, ending with a shell in next to the last st in row (58 shells in row). Ch 3, turn. Separation: Over the first ch-2 space make - 2 d c, ch 2, 2 d c (shell); * ch 3, skip next space, into next space make - 2 d c, ch 2, 2 d c (shell) *; repeat between *’s until you have completed 8 shells (front); ch 3, skip the next 13 shells for sleeve; over next shell make a shell; repeat between *’s until you have completed 16 shells for the back; ch 3, skip the next 13 shells for 2nd sleeve; ch 3, make a shell over the next shell, repeat between *’s across the remaining 7 shells. Ch 3, turn. Next row: * Make a shell over the ch-2 space, ch 3, repeat from * across row. Ch 3, turn. Repeat this last row until the piece measures 6 inches from the yoke. Fasten off and break yarn.
SLEEVES: Tie yarn in at the underarm edge and work in the shell pattern as on the body part until the piece measures 5 inches from edge of yoke. Break yarn. Sew up sleeve. Make the other sleeve the same way.
BEADING AT NECK EDGE: Tie yarn at neck edge, ch 4, * skip 1 st, 1 d c in next st, ch 2, repeat from * around neck edge. Break yarn.
BONNET: Starting at the center back, make a chain of 3 sts; join with a slip st to form a ring. Make 6 s c into ring. 2nd round: 2 s c in each st. 3rd round: (Mark the beginning of round with a colored thread as an aid in counting). 1 s c in next st, 2 s c in next st; repeat around once. 4th round: 1 s c in next 2 sts, 2 s c in next st; repeat around once. Having 1 more st between each increase, keep increasing 6 sts on a round until you have 12 sts between each increase (84 sts). Ch 1, turn. Next row: 1 s c in each of the next 69 sts. Ch 3, turn. Next row: 1 d c in first s c on row below, ch 2, 2 d c in same place as last d c made, * ch 2, skip 3 sts, into the next st make - 2 d c, ch 2, 2 d c (shell); repeat from * across the 69 sts (18 shells). Ch 3, turn. Next row: * Over ch-2 space make - 2 d c, ch 2, 2 d c; ch 2, skip next space; repeat from * across row. Repeat this last row until you have made 4 inches of the shell pattern. Break yarn. Neck band: Tie yarn at front edge, in top of turning ch-3, (working around the neck edge of bonnet); ch 6, * 1 s c in side of next shell, ch 6, skip next shell; repeat from * across shell rows (7 spaces); ch 6, 1 s c in 2nd s c on back of bonnet, ch 6, skip 3 s c, 1 s c in next st, ch 6, skip 3 s c, 1 s c in next st, ch 6, skip 3 s c, 1 s c in next st, ch 6, work across the 2nd side of shells as before (18 spaces in all). Ch 1, turn. Next row: Over each ch-6 space make 6 s c. Break yarn. Trim with ribbon.
BOOTIES: Instep and Sole: Chain 10 sts, turn, 1 s c in 2nd st from hook and in each of the next 8 chains. Ch 1, turn. 1 s c in each of the 9 sts. Repeat this last row 7 times more (9 rows in all). Chain 35 sts for ankle; join with a slip st to opposite corner, make 9 s c along side of instep, 9 s c across toe, 9 s c across 2nd side of instep, 1 s c in each of the 35-chain sts (62 s c). Mark beginning of round. Work around in s c for 10 rows more. Break yarn. Top part: Tie yarn in at the 18th chain st at back part of bootie. Ch 4, 1 d c in same st, ch 2, 2 d c in same place as last d c, * ch 2, skip 3 sts, into the next st make - 2 d c, ch 2, 2 d c (shell); repeat from * around (11 shells). Ch 4 turn. Work in the same pattern as on the bonnet until you have made 2 inches of the shell pattern. Break yarn. Sew up sole and back of bootie. Trim with ribbon. Make the other bootie the same way.
