Size 1 Year

Materials: J. & P. Coats Crepe-de-Sheen, 6 balls of any color desired. Milward's steel crochet hook No. 2. 2 yds of narrow ribbon for trimming.

Gauge: 8 d c make 1 inch; 3 rows of d c make 1 inch; 1 shell makes 1 inch; 2 rows of shells make 1 inch.

JACKET

Yoke. Beginning at neck, ch 51 (to measure about 9 inches), turn. In making yoke, pick up only the back loop of each d c of previous row. 1st row: D c in 4th ch from hook, d c in each of next 4 ch sts, 3 d c in next st, ch 2, 3 d c in next st, d c in each of next 5 sts, 3 d c in next st, ch 2, 3 d c in next st, d c in each of next 19 sts, 3 d c in next st, ch 2, 3 d c in next st, d c in each of next 5 sts, 3 d c in next st, ch 2, 3 d c in next st, d c in each of next 6 sts. Ch 3, turn. 2nd row: * D c in each d c, 3 d c in ch-2 sp, ch 2, 3 d c in same sp (thus increasing), repeat from * across. Ch 3, turn. 3rd to 10th rows incl: Same as 2nd row. At end of 10th row, break off. Attach yarn to first ch-2 sp on last row, ch 5, fasten to 2nd ch-2 sp to form armhole. Break off. Make other armhole to correspond.

Body. 1st row: Attach yarn to 1st d c of last row of yoke, ch 3, 3 d c in same st, ch 1, 4 d c in same st (1 shell made), * skip 8 d c, 4 d c in next st, ch 1, 4 d c in same st, repeat from * until 5 shells are made, the 5th shell being in 1st ch-2 sp. Skip ch-5, make a shell in 2nd ch-2 sp (this is the first shell on back yoke), ** skip 5 d c, 1 shell in next d c, repeat from ** until 13 shells are made on back of yoke, the 13th shell being in the 3rd ch-2 sp. Then skip the ch-5 and make 5 shells on front yoke to correspond with the other side. Ch 3, turn. 2nd to 15th rows incl: Make a shell in the ch-1 sp of each shell across. Ch 3, turn. At end of 15th row, fasten and break off.

Sleeve. 1st row: Attach yarn to 3rd st of ch-5 at underarm, ch 3, 3 d c in same st, ch 1, 4 d c in same st (1 shell), skip 4 d c of yoke, * make a shell in next d c, skip 7 d c, repeat from * until 9 shells are made, then ch 3, turn. 2nd to 9th rows incl: Make a shell in the ch-1 sp of each shell across. Ch 3, turn. At end of 9th row, break off. Sew up sleeve seams. Then work a row of shells around neck edge in same way. Draw ribbon in and out through shells at neck edge and sleeves, using 22 inch length for neck and 13 inch length for each sleeve. Tie into bows as desired.

CAP

The entire cap is made in d c, picking up only the back loop of each d c of previous row. The back of cap is made and then remainder is worked around the three sides of back of cap.

Beginning at top at back, ch 25, turn. 1st row: D c in 4th ch from hook, d c in each ch across. Ch 3, turn. 2nd to 14th rows incl: D c in each d c. Ch 3, turn. At end of 14th row, ch 3, turn and work along the side, across the top and down other side as follows: 1st row: D c through center of d c of last row, * d c between the two rows, d c through center of next d c, repeat from * to corner. Make 3 d c in corner st, d c in each st of foundation ch, 3 d c in corner st, and work down other side to correspond with opposite side (82 d c). Ch 3, turn. 2nd to 18th rows incl: D c in each d c. Ch 3, turn. If desired to make cap deeper, add a few more rows. Then make a row of shells as in jacket all around the entire cap. Turn over the last 3 rows of front edge and run ribbon through shells at bottom of cap, tying into a bow at front.
