GAUGE: Dc Section: 8 dc make 2 inches; 5 rows make 2 inches. Pattern Stitch: 3 groups make 2 inches; 5 rows make 2 inches.
PATTERN STITCH … 1st row: Dc in 5th ch from hook, * skip 1 dc, dc in next dc, ch 1, dc in same dc. Repeat from * across row. Ch 4, turn. 2nd row: Dc in 1st ch-1 sp, * dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, dc in same sp. Repeat from * across. Ch 4, turn. Repeat 2nd row for pattern.
Start at neck; ch 60 to measure about 16 inches. 1st row: Dc in 4th ch from hook and in each ch across (58 dc, counting turning ch). Ch 3, turn. 2nd row: Dc in 2nd dc from end and in next 6 dc, 5 dc in next dc (Left Front shoulder), dc in next 10 dc, 5 dc in next dc (Left Back shoulder), dc in next 18 dc, 5 dc in next dc (Right Back shoulder), dc in next 10 dc, 5 dc in next dc (Right Front shoulder), dc in next 7 dc, and dc in top of ch 3. Ch 3, turn. 3rd row: Dc in 2nd dc from end and in next 8 dc, 5 dc in next dc, dc in next 14 dc, 5 dc in next dc, dc in next 22 dc, 5 dc in next dc, dc in next 14 dc, 5 dc in next dc, dc to end. Ch 3, turn. 4th row: Dc in 2nd dc from end and in next 10 dc, 3 dc in next dc, dc in next 18 dc, 3 dc in next dc, dc in next 26 dc, 3 dc in next dc, dc in next 18 dc, 3 dc in next dc, dc to end. Ch 3, turn. Continue in this manner, working 3 dc in center of increasing 3 dc until 7 dc rows, in all, are worked. Work 1st row of Pattern Stitch, working 2 groups in center of each of the increasing 3-dc of previous row. Work 2nd row of Pattern Stitch for 9 groups, skip 14 groups (for left armhole), work 19 groups, skip 14 groups (for right armhole), work 9 groups. Work straight until there are 12 rows of Pattern Stitch. Fasten off.
SLEEVES … Attach yarn to center of the 2 increasing groups at right of shoulder section, and work across to corresponding point at left. Work straight until there are 9 rows of Pattern Stitch. Work 4 rows sc, then 1 row Pattern Stitch. Fasten off. Attach contrasting yarn and work 1 row Pattern Stitch. Fasten off. Sew sleeve seam. Work other sleeve to correspond.
Attach contrasting yarn to lower right front corner. Work dc evenly up front, around neck and down left front. Ch 3, turn. Continue working over these sts in dc until 4 rows, in all, are made, decreasing 5 sts evenly on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th rows at neck—to dec work off 2 dc as 1 dc. Fasten off. Fold border back against the front and sew in place along lower edge. Sew rosebuds in place as illustrated.
POMPON (Make 2) … Cut 2 circles of cardboard, each 1 inch in diameter. Then cut a circle ½ inch in diameter in center of each cardboard. Place one cardboard circle on top of the other. Cut several strands of main color, each about 4 yds. long. Draw one end of these strands through center of circle from back, pass them over outer edge and draw them through center of circle again. Continue in this manner until center of circle is completely filled in. With sharp scissors cut yarn between the 2 cardboards at outer edge. Cut 1 strand of yarn 1 yard long and tie securely around strands between cardboards. Remove cardboard and trim pompon evenly. With remainder of strand used to tie pompon, work a chain 12 inches long and fasten to neck at folded corner.
