Shell Stitch Set Pattern

Carriage Robe—4 4-oz. Skeins Knitting Worsted
Sacque—4 1-oz. Balls 3-ply Baby Yarn
Bonnet—1½ 1-oz. Ball 3-ply Baby Yarn
Booties—1 1-oz. Ball 3-ply Baby Yarn

Size 3 White Crochet Hook
Size 5 White Crochet Hook

CARRIAGE ROBE: With size 5 crochet hook, ch 97. Work 96 s c on ch. Ch 1 turn. Work back and forth in s c, for 5 more rows, (chaining one at end of each row) then work 3 rows of shell st pattern as follows:
Row 1—Ch 3, work 2 d c in first s c (half shell), * skip 2 sts, 1 s c in next st, skip 2 sts, 3 d c, ch 1, 3 d c in next st; repeat from * across row, ending with 3 d c in last st (15 full shell sts and 2 half shell sts). Ch 1 turn.
Row 2—* Work 3 d c into the back loop of the s c of previous row, ch 1, 3 d c in same st, 1 s c over the ch 1 in center of next shell st; repeat from * across row (16 shell sts), ending with 1 s c in the top of the ch 3. Ch 3 turn.
Row 3—Work 2 d c into the back loop of first s c, * 1 s c over the ch 1 in center of next shell st, 3 d c, ch 1, 3 d c, in next s c, taking back loop; repeat from * across row, ending with 3 d c in last s c. Ch 1 turn.
Work 1 s c in first st, * skip 1 st, 1 s c in each of next 3 sts; repeat from * across row (96 s c). Ch 1 turn. Work 6 more rows of s c, st for st, then work 3 rows of shell sts; 7 rows of s c; 41 rows of shell st; 7 rows of s c; 3 rows of shell st; 7 rows of s c; 3 rows of shell st; ending with 6 rows of s c. Fasten off.
Work 109 s c across each side of carriage robe.
Edging: Work 1 row of shell sts around entire robe. Fasten off.

SACQUE: With size 3 crochet hook, ch 55. Work 54 s c on ch. Ch 1 turn. Work back and forth in s c, for 20 rows.
Work over 18 sts for right shoulder. Work back and forth in s c across the 18 sts for 4 more rows, ending at neck edge. * Increase 1 st at neck edge in each of the next 2 rows; work 1 row even; repeat from * until there are 24 rows in all, measuring from shoulder (30 sts). Break yarn. Skip 18 sts for back of neck. Work remaining 18 sts to correspond to right front, ending at front edge. Do not break yarn.
With a separate strand of yarn, join front and back together at underarms with a ch of 7. Pick up yarn at front edge, and work back and forth in shell st pattern for 20 rows, having 20 full shell sts and 2 half shell sts on first row. Fasten off.
Sleeves: Starting on wrong side, join yarn at center underarm. Work back and forth in pattern, for 15 rows, having 5 full shell sts and 2 half shell sts on the first row.
Cuff: Work 1 row of s c, working 5 s c over each shell st, and 2 s c over each half shell st at each end. Work back and forth in s c, st for st, for 6 more rows. Work 1 row of shell sts across edge of cuff. Fasten off. Sew sleeve seams.
Edging: Join yarn at lower edge of right front. Work 1 row of shell sts around entire opening.

BONNET: Ch 4. Join with a sl st to form a ring. Work 6 s c in ring. Continue as given for Agda Bonnet Pattern for crown only.
Omitting 1 gore for back of neck, work back and forth in shell st pattern for 9 rows (11 shell sts). Work 1 row of s c across front edge of bonnet, working 1 s c into each d c only. Ch 1 turn. Work 4 more rows of s c, st for st, then work 2 rows of shell sts.
Neckband: Work 54 s c across neck edge, then work 4 more rows of s c, st for st. Fasten off. Finishing: Fold front of bonnet back on first row of s c, so that back of bonnet is toward you. Working right through the fold, work 2 rows of shell st, starting first row with a half shell.

BOOTIES: Work as given for Infant's Star Stitch Bootie Pattern for in­step and foot part only. Join yarn at center back of boot. Work back and forth in shell st pattern, having 5 full shell sts on first row, for 7 rows. Sew back seam.
