How Does Your Garden Grow Afghan Pattern #539

Every little tot will love to be able to learn to count these flowers and leran the colors of them by name. A warm but lightweight tuck-in cover.

Materials: Chadwick's Red Heart Germantown Zephyr, 34 balls (30 yd. balls) of color 818 Blue Jewel, 23 balls of 222 Maize, and 9 balls of 292 Copper Brown, 3 balls of 676 Emerald Green, 4 balls of 848 Skipper Blue, and 2 balls of 252 Dk. Orange. If 1 oz. balls are used, buy ⅓ the amount specified.
Milward's steel crochet hook No. 1 or Milward's Casein crochet hook No. 3 or 4.

For an afghan of about 30 x 38½ inches, 63 blocks (each 4 inches square) are required. Blocks are made individually and then sewed together. Plants are made later and appliquéd on.

Blue Block. Starting at lower edge, ch 25, turn. 1st row: D c in 4th ch from hook, d c in each ch across (23 d c counting turning ch as 1 d c). Ch 3, turn. 2nd row: Pick up only the front loop of each d c of previous row. D c in each of next 2 d c, ch 1, skip 1 d c, d c in next d c, ch 1, skip 1 d c, d c in each of next 11 d c, ch 1, skip 1 d c, d c in next d c, ch 1, skip 1 d c, d c in each of next 2 d c, d c in 3rd st of turning ch. Ch 3, turn. 3rd row: Pick up only the back loop of each d c, of previous row. D c in each of next 2 d c, ch 1, skip ch-1, d c in next d c, ch 1, skip ch-1, d c in each of next 11 d c, ch 1, skip ch-1, d c in next d c, ch 1, skip ch-1, d c in each of next 2 d c, d c in 3rd st of turning ch. Ch 3, turn. 4th row: Pick up only the front loop of each st of previous row. D c in each of next 2 d c, d c in next ch st, d c in next d c, d c in next ch st, d c in each of next 11 d c, d c in next ch st, d c in next d c, d c in next ch st, d c in each of next 2 d c, d c in turning ch. Ch 3, turn. 5th row: Pick up only the back loop of each d c. D c in each d c across, d c in turning ch. Ch 3, turn. 6th row: Pick up only the front loop of each d c. D c in each d c across. Ch 3, turn. 7th row: Same as 5th row. 8th and 9th rows: Repeat 2nd and 3rd rows. 10th row: Repeat 4th row. Break off.

Attach Emerald Green and work a row of s c around all sides of block, picking up both loops of d c, and making 3 s c at corners. Fasten and break off. Make 30 more blocks in the same way.

Yellow Block. Starting at lower edge, ch 25, turn, 1st row: D c in 4th ch from hook, d c in each ch across (23 d c counting turning ch-3 as 1 d c). Ch 3, turn. 2nd row: D c in each of next 2 d c, * ch 1, skip 1 d c, d c in next d c. Repeat from * until 9 sps are made, then make d c in next d c, d c in 3rd st of turning ch. Ch 3, turn. 3rd to 9th rows incl: D c in each of next 2 d c, * ch 1, skip ch-1, d c in next d c, repeat from * until 9 sps are made. Then d c in next d c, d c in turning ch. 10th row: D c in each of next 2 d c, * d c in next ch st, d c in next d c, repeat from * across, ending row with d c in turning ch (23 d c in all). Do not break off but ch 1, turn and work a row of s c around all sides of block, making 3 s c at corners. Make 31 more blocks in the same way.

Place blocks in position alternately, as in diagram, with wrong side on top. Sew blocks together with over and over stitches, picking up only the top loop of s c's.

Edging. With right side of work toward you, attach Maize to one corner, ch 3, s c in corner, * ch 3, skip 3 s c, s c in next s c, repeat from * around all sides of afghan, making s c, ch 3 and s c at corners. Fasten and break off. 2nd rnd: Attach Blue, ch 4, 4 d c in corner sp, * ch 1, 3 d c in next sp, repeat from * around, making 5 d c at corners. Join with sl st. 3rd rnd: S c in each d c and in each sp, making 3 s c in center d c at corners. Fasten and break off.

Plants. Flower Pots: Starting at base, with Copper Brown ch 6. 1st row: S c in 2nd ch from hook, s c in each ch across. Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: S c in each s c across. Ch 1, turn. 3rd and 4th rows: 2 s c in 1st s c, s c in each s c across, 2 s c in last s c. Ch 1, turn. 5th row: S c in each s c across. Fasten and break off. Sew flower pot on a Blue block at center, just above d c row.

Leaves: With Leaf Green, ch 14, turn. Sl st in 2nd ch from hook, then working in each ch, make 2 s c, 2 d c, 3 tr, 3 d c, 1 s c, 1 sl st. Then ch 7 (for stem), fasten and break off. Sew leaf in place, turning stem upwards.

Flower: Starting at center, with Skipper Blue ch 2, and make 7 s c in 2nd ch, from hook. Hereafter pick up only the back loop of each s c. 2nd rnd: 2 s c in each s c around. 3rd rnd: * S c in each of next 2 s c, 2 s c in next s c. Repeat from * around, then sl st in next s c. Break off. Sew flower to top of stem. Then with a needleful of Dk. Orange, make a few satin sts at center. Fasten and break off. Make a potted plant for each blue block.
