Potholder Pattern #9427

MATERIALS: J. & P. Coats Crochet Cord, 2 balls of Ecru and 1 ball of Red … Steel Crochet Hook No. 7 … A bone ring.

Starting at one side with Ecru, ch 60 (to measure about 6½ inches). 1st row: Dc in 4th ch from hook and in each ch across. Ch 3, turn. 2nd row: Make a dc behind next dc—to make a dc behind a dc, insert hook from back of work between 1st and 2nd dc, pass hook across next dc and insert it (from front to back) between this and next st, thread over, pull loop through, thread over and complete as for a dc. Make a dc behind each dc across in same manner, ending with a dc behind turning chain. Ch 3, turn. 3rd row: Dc (in the ordinary way) in next and each dc across, dc in top st of turning chain. Repeat the 2nd and 3rd rows alternately until piece is square, having an odd number of ridges and ending with the 3rd row. Break off. Attach Red to back loop of first st on 1st ridge and make sc in each st along row. Break off. Work a row of sc on free loops of same ridge, having right sides of sc’s facing. Work in this manner on every other ridge only. Make another piece same as this.
Press the Red sc rows flat. Sew on bone ring.

PADDING … Cut flannel or cotton batting slightly smaller, and lining material slightly larger, than crocheted piece. Place padding between crocheted piece and lining. Turn under edges of lining and sew to edges of crocheted piece with neat over-and-over stitches. For pot holders consisting of 2 crocheted pieces, insert padding between crochet and sew up edges.
