Clark's O.N.T. or J. & P. Coats Best Six Cord Mercerized Crochet, Size 30
Small Ball:
Clark's O.N.T.—6 balls of White or Ecru, or 9 balls of any color.
or
J. & P. Coats —5 balls of White or Ecru, or 6 balls of any color.
Big Ball:
Clark's O.N.T.—3 balls of White or Ecru.
or
J. & P. Coats —3 balls of White, Ecru, or any color.
Milward's steel crochet hook No. 11.

Chair Back—about 10 x 16 inches.
Arm Pieces—about 7½ x 10 inches.

Gauge: Motifs measure about 2¼ inches along each side and about 3¼ inches diagonally.

CHAIR BACK (Four-Leaf Clover Motif) … Starting at center, wind thread 10 times around left forefinger. 1st rnd: 5 s c in ring, * ch 5, 9 s c in ring. Repeat from * 2 more times, ch 5, 4 s c in ring. Join with sl st to 1st s c made. 2nd rnd: * Ch 15, s c in 5th s c between next 2 ch-5 loops. Repeat from * around; join (4 loops). 3rd rnd: In each loop make: s c, half d c, 21 d c, half d c, s c. Join (4 petals). 4th rnd: Sl st in 1st 4 sts, s c in next st, * ch 5, in center st of petal make 3 d c, ch 3 and 3 d c; ch 5, skip 7 sts, s c in next st, ch 5, s c in 5th st of next petal. Repeat from * around, ending with ch 3, half d c where 1st s c was made. 5th rnd: Ch 3 (to count as d c), * d c in next sp, ch 5, d c in next 3 d c; in corner sp make 2 d c, ch 3 and 2 d c; d c in next 3 d c; ch 5, d c in next sp, d c in following sp, ch 5, d c in same sp as last d c. Repeat from * around; join. 6th rnd: Sl st in next 2 sts and in next sp, * ch 5, s c in center d c of 5-d c group; ch 5, s c in corner sp, ch 5, s c in center d c of next d c-group—2 corner sps. (Ch 5, s c in next sp) 3 times. Repeat from * around; join. 7th rnd: 6 s c in each loop to within 2nd corner loop, 3 s c in next loop, ch 6, drop loop from hook, insert hook between center s c's of previous loop and pull dropped loop through. In ch-6 loop make (2 s c, ch 3) 3 times, 2 s c in same loop, 3 s c in incompleted loop, 6 s c in next loop, and continue thus around, making a ch-3 loop at center of each side and finishing corners as 1st corner was finished.

Daisy Motif ... Starting at center, wind thread 10 times around left forefinger. 1st rnd: 36 s c in ring; join. 2nd rnd: Ch 4 (to count as tr), tr in next 2 s c, holding back the last loop of each tr on hook; thread over and draw through all loops on hook (a cluster). * Ch 5, tr in next 3 s c, holding back the last loop of each tr on hook; thread over and draw through all loops on hook (another cluster). Repeat from * around (12 clusters). Join to tip of 1st cluster made. 3rd rnd: * Ch 5, skip next sp and cluster; in following sp make 10 d tr with ch-1 between; ch 5, skip next cluster and sp, s c at tip of following cluster. Repeat from * 3 more times, ending with ch 2 and d c (instead of ch-5) at tip of 1st cluster made. 4th rnd: Ch 3 (to count as d c), * d c in next ch-5 sp, (ch 5, skip next d tr, the sp and the d tr, s c in next sp) twice. (Ch 5, skip 1 d tr, s c in next sp) twice—2 corner loops made. Ch 5, skip next d tr, the sp and the d tr, s c in next sp, ch 5, d c in next ch-5 sp. Repeat from * around, ending with ch 5, sl st in 3rd st of ch-3 first made. 5th rnd: 6 s c in each loop to within 2nd corner loop, 3 s c in corner loop, ch 6, drop loop from hook, insert hook between s c's of previous loop and draw dropped loop through; in loop make (2 s c, ch 3) twice; 2 s c in same loop, ch 1, s c in corresponding ch-3 loop of 1st motif, ch 1, 2 s c in same loop on 2nd motif, 3 s c in next (incompleted) loop, 6 s c in each of next 2 loops, ch 1, s c in side loop of 1st motif, ch 1, 6 s c in next 3 loops, and continue thus around, joining 1st ch-3 loop of next corner to corresponding loop of 1st motif as before.
   Make 20 four-leaf clover motifs and 12 daisy motifs, and arrange as in illustration, joining motifs as 2nd was joined to 1st motif.

ARM PIECES … Make 6 four-leaf clover motifs and 2 daisy motifs for each arm piece, joining as for chair back.

TASSELS (Make 6) … Cut a cardboard 3 inches wide and 5 inches long. Cut 2 strands of thread, each 10 inches long, and place them across length of cardboard. Wind 1 strand of thread 64 times around width. Break off. Pick up both ends of 10-inch strands and tie securely. Remove cardboard and cut loops at one end. Wind a strand of thread tightly 10 times around tassel strands, ½ inch from top, and fasten securely. Sew a tassel to center loop of each inner point along bottom of chair back, and one at inner point of one short end of each arm piece.
