Repeat 12th row 5 more times. Ch 2 to turn at end of last row. 18th to 27th rows incl: Repeat 3rd row, omitting turning ch at end of 27th row. This completes waistband. Now work in knot-st pattern as follows:

1st row: * Draw loop on hook out ¼ inch, thread over and draw thread through, making a ch st of it; insert hook between loop and single thread of this ch and make an s c (a knot st made); make another knot st, skip 4 sts, s c in next st. Repeat from * across. Make two ⅜-inch knot sts to turn. 2nd row: * S c in double loop at right of next knot, s c in double loop at left of same knot, 2 knot sts. Repeat from * across, ending with s c at left of last knot. Make two ⅜-inch knot sts to turn. Repeat this row until piece measures 12 inches in all (including band).

To Shape Armholes: Sl st across to left of 1st knot, work in pattern across, ending with 2 knot sts, s c at right of last knot (2 knot sts decreased). Repeat this row 5 more times. Now work straight until piece measures 7 inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. Then shape shoulders as follows: 1st row: Sl st across to left of 1st knot, work in pattern across to within 2½ inches from center back; * ch 1, s c at right of next knot, ch 1, s c at left of same knot. Repeat from * across center 5 inches (20 knot sts) and continue in knot-st pattern to within last knot; 2 knot sts, s c at right of last knot, turn. 2nd row: Sl st to left of next knot and work in knot-st pattern to within 1st ch-1, * ch 1, s c in next ch-1. Repeat from * across center 5 inches, ending with s c in last ch-1 sp; continue in knot-st pattern to within last knot, ending as for 1st row. Repeat this last row 10 more times. Fasten off.

FRONT … Starting at bottom of waistband, ch 170 and work as for Back until piece measures 9 inches in all. Keeping side edges straight, begin cowl neck by increasing 2 knot sts every other row at center front until piece measures 12 inches in all – to inc. 2 knot sts, s c at right of next knot, 2 knot sts, s c at left of same knot. Now shape armholes as for Back, continuing with center increases until piece measures 5½ inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. Work without decreasing for 1½ inches. Shape shoulders as for Back. Fasten off.

SLEEVES … Starting at bottom, ch 122 and work as for lower part of waistband for 11 rows. Work in knot-st pattern for 1 inch. Next row: Work in pattern to within last knot, make 2 knot sts, s c at right of last knot, 2 knot sts, s c at left of last knot (2 knot sts increased). Repeat this last row once more. Now work 2 rows without increasing and 1 row increasing as before. Now work in knot-st pattern without increasing until piece measures 4 inches in all. Shape top of sleeve as follows: Sl st to left of next knot (2 knot sts decreased), make 1 knot st, s c at right and left of next knot (2 more knot sts decreased); work in pattern to within last knot, 2 knot sts, s c at right of last knot, turn. Repeat this row once more. Work in pattern, decreasing 2 knot sts at beginning of each row and ending each row with s c at right of last knot, until 12 knot sts remain. End off.

Buttons (Make 10) … Starting at center, ch 2. 1st rnd: 12 s c in 2nd ch from hook. 2nd and 3rd, rnds: S c in each s c around. 4th rnd: * S c in next s c, skip next s c. Repeat from * around, inserting button before opening becomes too small. Fasten off, leaving a 10-inch length of thread with which to sew on button.
Sew up shoulder and underarm seams, leaving a 5-inch opening at bottom of each side. Sew up sleeve seams and sew sleeves in. Work s c closely around lead weight. Do not break off but ch 10, join with sl st to center of top row of center front, and sl st down in each st of ch-10. Fasten off. Attach thread to right corner of narrow end of Front waistband and s c along this narrow end, making five ch-10 buttonloops at equal distances apart. Work in same manner across other narrow end of Front waistband. Sew on buttons to correspond with loops.
