Waffle Stitch and Irish Crochet Bedspread Pattern

Materials: This spread is lovely in two tones of any color, and as shown on the front of the book, Apricot and Peach Star Crochet Cord were used. Another lovely combination is Ecru and Beige, and suggest a combination of either white and any color or two tones of any color. Use a No. 7 steel crochet hook. Gem Crochet and Knitting Cotton is also very effective.

1st row: Apricot, (ch 6, sl st in 4th st from hook for p) 8 times, j for r.

2nd row: Ch 3, 3 tr over ch between 2 p, (4 tr between next 2 p) 7 times, sl st to 1st tr.

3rd row: * Ch 4, sl st in next st, taking up only the front side of the st, repeat from * around. Fasten off.

4th row: Join peach cotton to back st of 2nd row, ch 7, * sk 1 st, 1 d tr in back of next st, ch 3, repeat from * around, (16 sps). Join to 4th st of ch 7.

5th row: Ch 4, * 3 d tr in sp, 1 d tr in next d tr of last row, repeat from * around, j with sl st.

6th row: Ch 1, * 2 tr in next st of last row, 2 d tr in next st, 2 tr in next st, 1 s st in next st, repeat from * around, j with sl st.

7th row: Ch 1, * 1 s st in next st of last row, 2 tr in next st, 2 d tr in each next 2 sts of last row, 2 tr in next st, 1 s st in next st, sl st in next st, repeat from * around.

8th row: Sl st to center of petal, ch 10, * 1 tr in center of next petal, ch 9, 11 tr (thread over hook 4 times), in center of next petal, ch 3, 11 tr in same st with last 1 tr, ch 9, 1 tr in center of next petal, ch 9, 1 s st in center of next petal, ch 9, repeat from * around, j with sl st.

9th row: Ch 1, * 10 s sts in each sp to corner, 5 s sts in corner sp, repeat from * around, j to 1st s st with sl st. Fasten off.

10th row: Join apricot in center st in corner, ch 3, (2 tr, ch 3, 3 tr) in same st with ch-3, * (ch 2, sk 4 s sts of last row, 3 tr in next s st) 9 times, ch 3, 3 tr in same st with last 3 tr, repeat from * around, j to 1 st tr with sl st. Fasten off.

11th row: Join peach in corner sp, ch 3, (2 tr, ch 3, 3 tr) in same sp with ch-3, * (ch 1, 3 tr in next sp) 10 times, ch 3, 3 tr in same sp with last 3 tr, repeat from * around, j with sl st. Fasten off.

12th row: Join apricot in corner sp, ch 12, sl st in 4th st from hook, ch 3, sl st in same st with p, ch 2, 1 tr tr in same sp of last row, ch 6, sl st in 4th st from hook, ch 3, sl st in same st with p, (having ch cover the center of the 2 p), ch 2, 1 tr tr in same sp of last row, * (ch 7, sl st in 4th st, ch 3, sl st in same st with p, ch 10, sl st in 4th st from hook, ch 3, sl st in same st with p, ch 3, sk 8 sts of last row, 1 s st in next st) 4 times, ch 7, sl st in 4th st, ch 3, sl st in same st with p, ch 10, sl st in 4th st, ch 3, sl st in same st with p, ch 3, 1 tr tr in corner sp, (ch 6, sl st in 4th st, ch 3, sl st in same st with p, ch 2, 1 tr tr in same sp with last tr tr) twice. Repeat from * around, j with sl st in 6th st of ch-12,

13th row: Ch 12, sl st in 4th st from hook, ch 3, sl st in same st with p, * ch 2, 1 tr tr in tr tr of last row, ch 6, sl st in 4th st, ch 3, sl st in same st with p, ch 2, 1 tr tr in next tr tr, (ch 7, sl st in 4th st, ch 3, sl st in same st with p, ch 10, sl st in 4th st, ch 3, sl st in same st with p, ch 3, 1 s st over center of next loop between 2 p of last row) 5 times, ch 7, sl st in 4th st, ch 3, sl st in same st with p, ch 10, sl st in 4th st, ch 3, sl st in same st with p, ch 3, 1 tr tr in tr tr of last row, ch 6, sl st in 4th st, ch 3, sl st in same st with p. Repeat from * around, j to 6th st of ch-12 with sl st.

14th row: Make like 13th row, having 6 p-loops across side instead of 5.

15th row: Ch 12, * 1 tr tr in next tr tr of last row, ch 7, 1 d tr in next tr tr of last row, (ch 7, 1 tr in loop between 2 p) 7 times, ch 7, 1 d tr in tr tr, ch 7, repeated from * around, j in 4th st of ch-12 with sl st. Fasten off.

16th row: Join peach in tr tr of last row, ch 6, 1 tr in same st with ch, 8 tr in each sp and 1 tr in each tr of last row, (1 tr, ch 2, 1 tr) in each tr tr at corners, around, j with sl st.

17th row: Sl st to center of sp, ch 3, turn work and work on wrong side, 1 tr in next st of last row, * 1 tr in each next 2 sts, but instead of putting needle through top of tr in last row, take needle around the spoke of the tr, 1 tr in next tr of last row. Repeat from * across sides of square, make (1 tr, ch 2, 1 tr) in each corner, j with sl st in 1st tr.

18th row: Turn work, sl st back to center of corner, ch 5, 1 tr in sp, 1 tr in next tr of last row, * 1 tr in next st, but instead of putting needle through top of tr in last row, take needle around the spoke of the tr, 1 tr in each next 2 tr of last row. Repeat from * across sides of square, and make (1 tr, ch 2, 1 tr) in each corner sp. Repeat 17th and 18th rows until there are 6 rows of peach, then j apricot cotton and work 7 more rows.

BALLS FOR BEDSPREAD

With apricot ch 5, j for r, ch 1, 8 s sts in r. Do not j, 2 s sts in each st around. Widen each row until there are 29 s sts in the 4th round. Do not widen next 5 rounds, begin to close by sk 1 s st in every 6th st, for 2 rounds. Then stuff with cotton and finish closing the ball, sk a st at intervals until closed, having 14 rounds for each ball.

TO JOIN BLOCKS TOGETHER

Fasten peach cotton in corner st of 1st bl.

1st row: Ch 10, sl st in corner st of 2nd bl, sl st in next st, turn.

2nd row: S st in next 2 sts of ch, (ch 2, sk 2, s st in next 2 sts of ch) twice, sl st in next st on 1st bl from which ch-6 started, ch 2, sk 2 sts on side of 1st bl, sl st in next st, turn.

3rd row: Ch 2, 2 tr in ch-2 of last row, ch 2, 2 tr in next ch-2 of last row, ch 2, 1 tr in the st next to the 2nd bl, sk 2 sts on side of 2nd bl, sl st in next st, turn.

4th row: Ch 1, 2 s sts in sp, ch 2, 2 s sts in next sp, sl st in same st as last row started, ch 2, sk 2 sts on side of bl, sl st in next st, turn.

Repeat 3rd and 4th rows for length of block.
