Directions are given for "AUNT LYDIA" Heavy Rug Yarn. "STAR" Rug Yarn and "STAR" Cotton Yarn are given in parenthesis.

With Beige ch 6 (11), 2 s c in 2nd st from hook, 1 s c in each of the next 3 (8) sts of ch, 2 s c in next st of ch, ch 1 to turn all rows.

2nd Row. Working in front loop of st, 2 s c in 1st s c, 1 s c in each remaining s c.

3rd Row. Working in back loop of st, 2 s c in 1st s c, 1 s c in each remaining s c.

The remainder of potholder is worked in same manner alternating 1 row worked in front loop, 1 row worked in back loop and will not be referred to again. The ribbed side will be the inside of work.

4th Row. 2 s c in 1st s c, 1 s c in each of the next 6 (11) s c, decrease 1 s c in next 2 sts (to decrease: insert hook in st, pull loop through, insert hook in next st, pull loop through, yarn over and work off all loops at one time).

5th Row. Working in s c, increase 1 s c at end of row.

6th Row. Increase 1 s c at beginning of row, 1 s c in each remaining s c. Work 1 (1) row even. Repeat the last 2 (2) rows twice (3).

12th (14th) Row. Increase 1 s c at the beginning of row and decrease 1 s c at end of row. Work 1 (3) row even.

14th (18th) Row. 1 s c in each of the 1st 12 (17) s c, sl st in next st, ch 4 (6), turn.

15th (19th) Row. 3 s c in 2nd st from hook, 1 s c in each of the next 2 (4) sts of ch, 1 s c in next sl st, 1 s c in each remaining s c.

16th (20th) Row. 1 s c in each of the 1st 17 (25) s c.

17th (21st) Row. Decrease 1 s c at end of row.

18th (22nd) Row. Decrease 1 s c at beginning of row, 1 s c in each remaining s c. Work 1 (3) row even.

20th (26th) Row. Same as 18th (22nd) row.

21st (27th) Row. Same as 17th (21st) row.

22nd (28th) Row. Same as 18th (22nd) row.

23rd (29th) Row. 1 s c in each of the 1st 9 (16) sts, decrease in next 2 sts.

24th (30th) Row. Same as 18th (22nd) row.

25th (31st) Row. 1 s c in each of the 1st 6 (12) sts, decrease in next 2 sts.

26th (32nd) Row. Skip 1 st, decrease in next 2 sts, 1 s c in each remaining s c, break yarn.

EAR: Ch 8 (12), sl st in 2nd st from hook, 1 s c in each remaining st of ch, ch 1 to turn all rows.

2nd Row. Working in back loop, 2 s c in 1st s c, 1 s c in each of the next 3 (7) s c, decrease in next 2 sts.

3rd Row. Working in front loop, decrease in 1st 2 sts, 1 s c in each of the next 3 (6) sts, 2 s c in next st.

4th Row. 2 s c in 1st s c, 1 s c in each of the next 2 (7) sts, sl st in next st.

5th Row. Skip 1 st, decrease in next 2 sts, 1 s c in each remaining s c, break yarn.

Starting at the 13th row of head, sew ear to top of head as illustrated. Work another section in same manner.

Starting at right hand side of straight edge of neck overcast the 2 sections together working 1 inch beyond ear and leaving about 13 rows free on opposite side for opening.

MANE: Cut 18-5 inch lengths. Take 1 length, loop through st, draw ends through tightly.

Start at 2 sts before ear, work in back of ear and down side of head. Trim as illustrated.

Overcast mane to back of ear to hold in position.

BRIDLE IS MADE TO FIT: With Brown "STAR" Six Strand Embroidery Cotton ch 7, s c in 2nd st from hook, 1 s c in each remaining st of ch, ch 1 to turn all rows.

2nd Row. Work 1 s c in each s c. Repeat 2nd row a sufficient number of times for strip to go across mouth. Sew in position. Crochet another strip in same manner to fit from top of head to 1st strip, ending with 1 s c in each of the 1st 4 s c, sl st in next s c.

Next Row. Skip the sl st, 1 s c in each remaining s c.

Next Row. 1 s c in each of the 1st 2 s c, sl st in next s c.

Next Row. Skip the sl st, 1 s c in each remaining s c, break thread. Sew the slanted edge to 1st strip. Crochet a 3rd strip in same manner as 2nd strip to fit from 2nd strip to lower part of head sewing slanted edge to 2nd strip. Crochet a 4th strip in same manner as 1st strip to fit from 2nd strip to top of head. Sew in position.

REIN: With Brown ch 3, s c in 2nd st from hook, ch 1, turn.

2nd Row. S c in s c, ch 1, turn. Repeat 2nd row until rein measures about 9 inches or desired length, break thread.

Sew in position as illustrated.

DECORATION FOR BRIDLE: With Red ch 6, s c in 2nd st from hook, 1 s c in each remaining st of ch, ch 1, turn.

2nd Row. 1 s c in each s c, ch 1, turn. Repeat 2nd row 4 times, break thread. Work another square in same manner. Sew in position.

With Green work 2 more squares in same manner but ch 4 in beginning and work only 3 rows.

Sew 1 Green square on top of each Red square.

With Yellow ch 3, s c in 2nd st from hook, 5 s c in same space, join, break thread leaving an end long enough to sew in position. Work 11 more rings in same manner. With Brown, cover a bone ring with s c and sew in back of ear.
