MATERIALS:
J. & P. COATS or CLARK'S O.N.T. BEST SIX CORD MERCERIZED CRO­CHET, Size 30.
Small Ball:
J. & P. Coats—3 balls of White or Ecru, or 4 balls of or any color,
Clark's O.N.T.—4 balls of White or Ecru, or 5 balls of any color.
Big Ball:
J. & P. Coats—2 balls of White, Ecru or Cream.
Steel Crochet Hook No. 10 or 11.
¾ yard of linen.

This material is sufficient to make 2 place mats each about 11½ x 16½ inches, a runner about 11½ x 22 inches and 2 napkins about 11 inches square.

PLACE MATLace … Make a chain 1 yard long (14 ch sts to 1 inch). 1st rnd: In 6th ch from hook make tr, ch 1 and tr, (ch 1, skip next ch, tr in next ch) 38 times; ch 1, skip next ch, in next ch make (tr, ch 1) twice and tr; (ch 1, skip next ch, tr in next ch) 74 times; ch 1, skip next ch, in next ch make (tr, ch 1) twice and tr; (ch 1, skip next ch, tr in next ch) 38 times; ch 1, skip next ch, in next ch make (tr, ch 1) twice and tr; (ch 1, skip next ch, tr in next ch) 74 times; ch 1, join with sl st in 4th st of turning chain at begin­ning of rnd. Cut off remaining chain. 2nd rnd: Ch 5, ** in corner tr make (tr, ch 1) twice and tr; * ch 1, tr in next tr. Repeat from * across to next corner tr, ch 1. Repeat from ** around. Join. 3rd to 7th rnds incl: Ch 5, * make tr in next tr, ch 1. Repeat from * across to next corner tr; in corner tr make (tr, ch 1) twice and tr. Continue thus around. Cut linen slightly larger than pattern (al­lowing for a narrow hem). Hem edges; then sew lace to linen.

NAPKINLace … Make a chain 10 inches long (14 ch sts to 1 inch). 1st row: Tr in 11th ch from hook, (ch 3, skip 3 ch, tr in next ch) 12 times; ch 3, skip next ch, in next ch make (tr, ch 1) twice and tr; ch 3, skip next ch, tr in next ch, (ch 3, skip 3 ch, tr in next ch) 13 times. Cut off remaining chain. Ch 7, turn. 2nd row: (Tr in next tr, tr in 3 ch, tr in next tr, ch 3) 7 times; in corner tr make (tr, ch 1) twice and tr; (ch 3, tr in next tr, tr in 3 ch, tr in next tr) 7 times; ch 3, skip 3 sts of turning chain, tr in next ch. Break off.
   Cut linen 11½ inches square. Cut out corner for lace. Roll entire edge and whip down. Sew lace to edge of cut-out corner. Attach crochet thread in top of last tr made, make a chain about 5 inches long. Attach another ball of thread in same tr, ch 1 and work sc in each st of chain just made. Whip the chain edge of this strip to edge of nap­kin. * Make 5 inches more of chain; work sc in each st of chain; then whip to edge of napkin. Repeat from * until other end of corner is reached. Break off the chain thread and continue with sc over lace edge as follows: * Ch 5, sc in 5th ch from hook (p made), sc in 3 ch, sc in tr, p, sc in 4 tr. Repeat from * to corner; sc in 3 ch, sc in tr, p, (sc in ch 1, sc in tr, p) twice; ** sc in 3 ch, sc in tr, p, sc in 4 tr, p. Repeat from ** across to end of lace. Break off.
