MATERIALS: Chadwick’s Red Heart Afghan Wool, 28 skeins (1 oz. skeins) of Antique Blue and 18 skeins of Pearl Grey.
Milward's Steel Crochet Hook No. 2/0 (double zero).

Gauge: 9 sts make 2 inches; 3 rows make 1¼ inches.

With Antique Blue make a chain 70 inches long (about 5 ch sts to 1 inch). 1st row: D c in 4th ch from hook, d c in each ch until there are 246 d c, counting turning ch as 1 d c. Cut off remaining chain. Ch 3, turn. 2nd row: D c in each d c across. Ch 3, turn. 3rd row: Repeat 2nd row. 4th row: D c in 8 d c; d c in next d c, leaving last 2 loops on hook; drop Blue, attach Grey and * draw through 2 loops. Holding Blue along top of previous row and working over it, make d c in next 11 d c (thus concealing Blue); d c in next d c, leaving last 2 loops on hook; drop Grey, pick up Blue and draw through 2 loops. D c in next 15 d c, concealing Grey as before and leaving the last 2 loops of last d c on hook; drop Blue, pick up Grey. Repeat from * across, ending with 12 Grey d c and 9 Blue d c. Ch 3, turn. Now work as follows, changing colors and concealing unused color as before. 5th row: 9 Blue, * 3 Grey, 6 Blue, 3 Grey, 15 Blue. Repeat from *, ending row with 3 Grey, 6 Blue, 3 Grey, 9 Blue. 6th row: Repeat 5th row. 7th row: 9 B, * 21 G, 6 B. Repeat from * across, ending with 12 G, 9 B. 8th row: 27 B, 3 G, 6 B, 3 G, * 15 B, 3 G, 6 B, 3 G. Repeat from * across, ending with 18 B. 9th row: 18 B, 3 G, 6 B, 3 G, * 15 B, 3 G, 6 B, 3 G. Repeat from * across, ending with 27 B. 10th row: 18 B, 21 G, * 6 B, 21 G. Repeat from * across, ending with 18 B. 11th row: Same as 8th row. 12th row: Same as 9th row. 13th row: 9 B, 12 G, * 6 B, 21 G.
