Gauge: 4 sc = 1" (double strand); 1 shell = 1½" (single strand)

BOTTOMInside—With double strand of L ch 17, to measure 4¼". Work tightly. Rnd 1—2 sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each of next 14 ch, 4 sc in last ch, con­tinuing along other side work sc in each of next 14 ch, 2 sc in same place as first 2 sc. Mark beg of rnds. Rnd 2—* 2 sc in each of next 2 sc, sc in each of next 14 sc, 2 sc in each of next 4 sc, sc in each of next 14 sc, 2 sc in each of last 2 sc. Rnds 3-6 incl—Inc 4 sc evenly around each end (not directly over incs of pre­vious rnd). Rnd 7—Sc in each sc (76 sc). Sl st in next st. End off. Outside—With double strand of D work same as Inside (be sure both pieces have same number of sts). End off 1 strand, sl st to center of short end.

SIDESRnd 1—With single strand of D, working through back loops only of Out­side and both loops of Inside, and insert­ing base, work * sc in next 8 sc, 2 sc in next sc. Repeat from * around, thus join­ing. Sl st in 1st sc (84 sc). Turn. Rnd 2—Ch 3, 4 dc in same place as sl st—½ shell made—* skip 2 sc, sc in next sc, skip 2 sc, 9 dc in next sc—shell made. Repeat from * around, ending with 4 dc in same place as first 4 dc. Sl st in top of ch-3 (14 shells). Drop D, attach L. Turn. Rnd 3—With L sc in same place as sl st, * ch 3, thread over, draw up a loop in next dc, over and through 2 loops—unfinished dc made—make unfinished dc in each of next 3 dc, in next sc, and in next 4 dc; over and through all 10 loops on hook, ch 1 tightly—reverse shell made—ch 3, sc in next dc. Repeat from * around, joining last ch-3 with sl st to 1st sc. Turn. Rnd 4—Sc in same place as sl st, * shell in center of next reverse shell, sc in next sc. Repeat from * around, ending with sl st in 1st sc. Drop L, pick up D. Turn. Rnd 5—With D ch 3, make unfinished dc in each of first 4 dc, over and through all 5 loops on hook—½ reverse shell made—* ch 3, sc in next dc, ch 3, work reverse shell over next 4 dc, next sc and next 4 dc. Repeat from * around, ending with unfinished dc in each of last 4 dc, then draw up a loop in top of ½ reverse shell and draw this loop through all loops on hook; ch 1 tightly. Turn. Rnd 6—Ch 3, 4 dc in same place as joining—½ shell made—* sc in next sc, shell in center of next reverse shell. Repeat from * around, ending same as rnd 2. Drop D, pick up L. Repeat rnds 3 through 6 four more times (5 complete stripes of L and D). End off.

HANDLE—With double strand of D ch 58". Rnd 1—2 sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each ch across, 4 sc in last ch, con­tinuing along other side work sc in each ch across, 2 sc in same place as first 2 sc. Rnd 2—Sc in next sc, 3 sc in next sc, sc in each sc across to 4-sc group at end, 3 sc in next sc, sc in each of next 2 sc, 3 sc in next sc, sc in each sc to last 2 sts, 3 sc in next st, sc in last st. Sl st in 1st sc. End off.

DRAWSTRINGS—With double strand of D, ch 24". Sl st in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. End off.

KNOBS (make 2)—With double strand of D, ch 4, sl st in 1st ch, forming a ring. Rnd 1—8 sc in ring. Rnd 2—2 sc in each sc. Rnd 3—Sc in each sc. Rnd 4—* Draw up a loop in each of next 2 sc, over and through all 3 loops on hook—dec made. Repeat from * around. Rnd 5—Repeat rnd 4. End off.

Finishing—Sew handle along sides of bag, with ends of handle at 1st rnd of Sides. Run drawstrings through center of top L stripe. Fill knobs with cotton or yarn ends and sew one to each end of cord.
