REQUIREMENTS:                       

YARN: 6-ounces of Germantown or soft Knitting Worsted
NEEDLES: 1-pr. #2 single pointed, 1-pr. #4 single pointed.
CROCHET HOOK: #3 Bone

GAUGE: 7½ sts to an inch.

SWEATER BACK: Using the #2 needles cast on 62 sts. Work in ribbing of p 2, k 2 for an inch. Now change to the #4 needles and work in stockinette stitch (k 1 row, p 1 row) for 8 rows, ending with a purl row. PATTERN: ROW 1: * k 2, slip 1, repeat from * across row, ending with k 2. ROW 2: Purl across row. ROW 3: * slip 2, k 1, repeat from * across row, ending with slip 2 sts. ROW 4: Purl across row. Work these 4 rows of pattern 2 more times, (12 rows in all). Now work in stockinette stitch until the piece measures 7 inches in all. UNDERARM SHAPING: Bind off 2 sts at the beginning of a knit and purl row. Decrease 1 stitch at each side of the work every other row, twice. Now work even until the armhole measures 4-inches above the underarm bind off. SHOULDERS: Bind off 8 sts at the beginning of the next 4 rows, (twice at each side—16 sts for each shoulder). Bind off the remaining sts very loosely for the back of neck.

LEFT FRONT: Using the #2 needles cast on 40 sts. 1st row: K 6, (garter st border); p 2, k 2 on the remaining 34 sts. 2nd row: Work ribbing over 34 sts, knit the last 6 sts. Work one inch. Change to the #4 needles and work in stockinette stitch for 8 rows, ending with a purl row. ROW 1: * k 2, slip 1, repeat from * across 26 sts; knit to end of row. ROW 2: K 6, (border); purl remainder of row. 3rd row: * slip 2, k 1, repeat from * across 26 sts; knit to end of row. 4th row: K 6, (border); purl to end of row. Repeat these 4 rows, twice more, (12 rows in all). NEXT ROW: K 15 sts, place a marker on the needle, * k 2, slip 1, repeat from * across 11 sts, ending with k 2; place a marker on the needle; knit to end of needle. Now continue on these 11 sts in the pattern and keeping the rest of sts as they are until the piece measures the same as the back up to the underarm, ending with a purl row. UNDERARM SHAPING: At the underarm edge bind off 2 sts once. Decrease 1 stitch at the underarm edge every other row twice. Now work even until the armhole meas­ures 3 inches above the bind off. NECK SHAPING: At the neck edge bind off 12 sts once; bind off 4 sts at the neck edge twice. Work even until he armhole measures 4½ inches above the underarm bind off. SHOULDERS: From the armhole edge bind off 8 sts, twice. Break yarn.

RIGHT FRONT: Using the #2 needles cast on 40 sts and start as follows: 1st row: Rib 34 sts; k 6 sts, (border sts). 2nd row: K 6 sts, (border); work ribbing on the remaining sts. At ½-inch from the beginning, place first buttonhole: binding off 2 sts in center of k 6 border. On the next row, cast on 2 sts above the bound off sts. After one inch, change to the #4 needles and work to correspond to the left front; (marking 26 sts from armhole for the pattern). Hereafter place a buttonhole every 1½-inches apart.

SLEEVES: Using the #2 needles cast on 32 sts and work in ribbing of p 2, k 2, for 2-inches. Change to the #4 needles and knit across next row increasing 10 sts along row, (42 sts). Purl back. Work in stockinette stitch increasing 1 stitch at each side of the work every inch until there are 48 sts on the needle. Work even until the sleeve measures 7½-inches in all. UNDERARM SHAPING AND CAP: Bind off 2 sts at the beginning of the next 2 rows, (once at each side). Decrease 1 st at each side of the work every other row 8 times. Decrease 1 stitch at each side of the work every row, 6 times. Bind off the remaining sts. Make the other sleeve the same way. Sew shoulders. NECK BAND: Using the #2 needles pick up and knit the sts around neck. Knit every row for ¾-inches. Bind off on the wrong side of work. Sew sleeve and underarm seams. Sew sleeves into armhole matching underarm seams.

BONNET: Using the #4 needles cast on 76 sts. Work the slipstitch pattern for 2½ inches, ending with a purl row. NEXT ROW: Knit across; INCREASE 1 st in every stitch in the center 14 sts, (90 sts). Now work in stockinette stitch until the piece meas­ures 6-inches in all. Bind off 28 sts at the beginning of a knit and purl row. On the remaining 34 sts, work in ribbing of p 2, k 2, for the length of bound off piece. Bind off these sts. Sew bound off sts to this piece. NECK BAND: Using the #2 needles and with the right side of the work facing you, pick up sts around neck and work in ribbing of p 2, k 2, for ¾ inches. Bind off, knitting the knit sts, purling the purl sts. Make 1 row of s c along front edge of bonnet. Trim with ribbon.
